Periodontal disease is a disease of the gums and bone around the teeth caused by bacteria that has colonized the plaque and calculus. Symptoms include bleeding and swelling of the gums, loose teeth, and bad breath. Findings of deep pocket measurements and bone loss showing longer teeth are common with periodontitis. Deep cleanings or Scaling and Root Planning is a type of cleaning that is first done to treat periodontal disease non-surgically. After the deep cleaning is performed it is recommended to return every 3-4 months for periodontal maintenance cleanings to make sure the gum disease stays under control. If the periodontal gum disease becomes too severe to just treat non-surgically then a referral to a periodontal specialist is made to see if gum or bone surgery will help improve the problem.
There are many home cleaning tools that the doctor may recommend to help keep your mouth clean and healthy between office cleaning visits. The goal in treating periodontal disease is to keep the bacterial count in your mouth to as low a number as possible. The Sonicare electric toothbrush, Waterpik waterflosser, and/or mouth rinses are examples that you can use at home to really keep your mouth as healthy and clean as possible. Our office carries many of these great products for you to take home at better prices than most retail stores. Most HSA/FSA programs can be used to purchase these products with a letter of medical necessity signed by the doctor.
